Hi I’m Malcolm; runner, cellist and teacher of the Alexander Technique since 1984.
My name's Malcolm Balk and I’ve been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1984. I started taking Alexander lessons to help me cope with the anxiety and tension I experienced learning to play the cello as an adult. Thankfully, I am still enjoying the benefits of those early lessons some 40 years later.
In 1982 I started my professional teacher training in London, England with Patrick Macdonald, one of the first people trained by Alexander himself ! After qualifying in 1984, I spent several more years in London, establishing a teaching practice as well as continuing my professional development with many first generation teachers.
I also learned how to apply the Alexander Technique to sport, particularly running, where I still compete as a master’s athlete. Along the way I’ve co-authored 2 books : Master The Art of Running and Master the Art of Working Out.
Over the years I have lectured at many university music departments including Dal, McGill, Uni de Montreal and SUNY Plattsburgh, where I taught for 10 years. I also worked for over 10 years at the St Andrew’s Opera Workshop and at L’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opera de Montreal with many of Canada’s brightest young opera singers.
